Becoming an Air Traffic Controller After Age 31
While the age limit may seem like a roadblock, it’s not entirely insurmountable.
For those who are unable to pursue a career as an air traffic controller in the FAA due to age restrictions, there are still many opportunities within the air traffic control community. The Federal Contract Tower Program (FCT) does not have the same upper age limits the FAA does. There are currently 265 Federal Contract Towers in the United States of America. The focus for ATCFO is to provide quality controllers to fill vacancies in the FCT program.
Additionally, individuals with experience in air traffic control can consider roles in training and education, simulation technology, or engineering. Sharing their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of air traffic controllers is a valuable contribution to the industry.
To increase your chances of finding a suitable role, it’s crucial to stay informed about industry trends, regulations, and job openings. Networking with professionals in the aviation industry, attending industry events, and joining relevant organizations can help you expand your professional network and gain valuable insights. Remember, while the age limit may be a constraint, it’s important to focus on the skills and qualifications that make you a strong candidate for a career in air traffic control.
